Reading books makes you wiser
Samvida Venkatesh became the newest Indian Spell Bee after she correctly spelt the word "belligerent" at the HDFC Life Spell Bee - India Spells 2012 contest, powered by The Times of India.
The Class IX student from National Public School, Indiranagar, Bengaluru, attributed her success not to memorising the spellings of words but to her reading habit. "I'm an avid reader. I started reading at the age of four," says Samvida, who lists Jeffrey Archer, Dan Brown, Suzanne Collins and JK Rowling as her favourite authors.
The mother of Sukant Koul, the Amity International School Delhi student who stood second, had this to say, "One thing common among the 32 city finalists is they are all avid readers. No one comes this far by memorising difficult words. You have to be a regular reader."
Indeed, reading opens up a whole new world for you - a wonderful world of stories and history. In fact, the more you read, the more you know. So, you become smarter. And the more you know, the more you think. Therefore, you end up becoming all the more wiser.
There are many researches in support of inculcating the reading habit amongst children. Reading makes them take a break from playing and creating a hullabaloo and forces them to sit calmly. Besides improving their vocabulary, it also improves their recognition and analytical skills. It also improves their memory skills.
