LIFESTYLE AND NEWS - New cycle tracks in Dubai: RTA planning cycling routes for 11 neighbourhoods - UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

 

Dh40 million project to be completed by 2016


 

 

 

Dubai: Cycling enthusiasts in Dubai are in for a treat as projects to build new tracks across 11 locations in the city have been launched, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced.

The announcement from RTA comes close on the heels of opening a 75-km long Dubai Cycling Course in Seih Assalam, part of a cycling master plan that includes a 25km track in Jumeirah as well as smaller tracks near Mall of the Emirates, Al Mamzar Park and Al Mizhar Park.

Apart from these tracks, RTA is currently constructing a 4.5-km-long track in the central district of Bur Dubai, and has completed the designs of four tracks linking Jumeirah Road with four Metro stations on Shaikh Zayed Road. Additionally, the authority has completed the construction of 1,400 bike racks around all Metro stations.

Following the successful implementation of the first phase of the cycling master plan, RTA has now approved construction of cycling tracks in 11 residential areas stretching 52km at a cost of Dh40 million.

“The construction of the cycling tracks is part of a master plan developed by RTA to provide dedicated cycling spaces across the entire Dubai emirate in a bid to encourage the use of bikes as an environment-friendly transit means, as well as for the benefit of cycling enthusiasts,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of RTA.

Work on the new cycling tracks will begin this year and will be completed by 2016.

Residential areas like Al Barsha, Al Khawaneej, Al Warqa, Al Quoz, Al Safouh Road, Al Mamzar Park, Mushrif Park, Hor Al Anz East, and Mirdif, have been selected for the project.

Al Tayer said the areas were selected based on various parameters including their popularity with tourists and their aesthetic nature. The areas are also frequented by cyclists and serve the Metro and public transport stations.

“The design of the tracks has been tailored to ensure the security and safety of bikers and the locations have been selected keeping in mind the convenience of residents and visitors to the areas, suitability of the site, traffic safety, and the appeal to pedestrians,” added Al Tayer.

Al Tayer said that since 2008 RTA has developed a Cycling Master Plan that included charting routes for bikes within the rights-of-way as well as separate lanes.

The Plan detailed the specifications and standards of separating cycling tracks from pedestrian pathways, and addressed the intersection points with cycling tracks, provision of biking racks in general and at the public transport stations in particular, cycling lanes in entertainment areas, materials to be used in the construction of cycling tracks, and signage for bikes and tracks.

So far the biggest of the cycling projects constructed by the RTA has been the 75-km-long Dubai Cycling Course. The first part of this course stretching 18km alongside Al Qudra Road North was opened in January. The second part of the course, which was opened in March, stretches about 49km, starting from the front of Bab Al Shams Hotel up to Al Qudra Road roundabout, then turns southward alongside the road leading to Seih Assalam.

The course includes public utilities and shops for hiring bikes, gear and accessories in addition to a medical clinic.

ONLY GOOD NEWS, NOTHING ELSE, JUST ENJOY LIVING!

 
Have you ever realized that, besides 99% of the news on tv, radio, paper etc, shows not good news, like "war here" "conflict there" or "xx people died" and news like that, telling about death, war, sikness, hungry, conflicts and things related to that, again besides it, NOBODY,  neither the tv broadcasts, neither the writers not even the people that reads, listen, watch those  news, just pays attention to this but DOES NOT SHARE THE FEELING THAT THE PEOPLE AFFECTED IN THOSE NEWS FEELS.

So having this into consideration, if we dont share neither care about the people that is not having a good time in their lives, than why wath those news? does ir gives us something goo for our lives? NO!. Does it teaches something to us? NO! so lets just turn off the TV, radio and avoid reading / comment those news that are nothing but sickness to our hearth and spend some times reading some good news and feeding our  brain and most of all OUR SOUL  with time to worry about what we really want and what our hearth lead us to go!

CURIOSIDAD - Un lago que brilla en la oscuridad - AUSTRALIA

 




Un hombre logró fotografiar un rarísimo fenómeno que convierte el color del agua de un lago australiano en un tono azul fluorescente.

Los nadadores que tomaron un baño de medianoche en ese acuífero también parecían brillar en la oscuridad, gracias a una reacción química llamada bioluminiscencia, que ocurre cuando los microorganismos presentes en el agua se alteran.

“Fue como si estuviéramos jugando con pintura radiactiva”, dijo el fotógrafo Phil Hart autor de las imágenes.

Phil puso su cámara en una velocidad de obturación muy lenta y tiró arena y piedras al agua para provocar la reacción y capturar la mayor cantidad de neblina azul como fuera posible.

Estas imágenes son particularmente impresionantes porque la concentración del microorganismo “Noctiluca Scintillans” fue anormalmente alta cuando se registraron estas fotos en el Lago Gippsland en Victoria, Australia.

Phil, quien dijo que estar allí viendo esta bioluminiscencia es “fascinante y muy raro”. Explicó que hace más de 50 años visita el lago Gippsland y jamás había visto una bioluminiscencia como ésta.

Se cree que la combinación de los incendios forestales e inundaciones han creado los altos niveles de nutrientes que los organismos presentes en el mencionado lago utilizan para alimentarse.

¿Es una modificación del ADN de los microorganismos? Eso es lo que piensa el investigador español John Doe. Asegura que algunos de sus contactos, que son ex ingenieros de la NASA, le han dicho que este fenómeno tiene que ver mucho con “el famoso cinturón de fotones, que está modificando el ADN de todo ser viviente”.

SCIENCE / MARS - Curiosity Mars rover picks up the pace - WORLD

The Curiosity rover is making good progress towards its first major science destination on Mars.
 

The vehicle has now driven 289m (950ft) since its landing on the Red Planet some six weeks ago.

It has perhaps another 200m still left to cover to get to a location dubbed Glenelg, where researchers expect to find an interesting juxtaposition of three types of geological terrain.

But before it goes any further, the rover will study a dark rock.

Measuring about 25cm in height and 40cm at the base, it is not expected to have major science value.

Rather, the rock provides an opportunity for the robot to use three of its survey instruments in tandem for the first time.

The rock has been named "Jake Matijevic" in honour of a Curiosity engineer who tragically died shortly after the vehicle touched down in Mars' Gale Crater on 6 August (GMT).

The rover will zap the rock from a distance with its ChemCam laser and examine it up close with its Mahli "hand lens" and the X-ray spectrometer known as APXS. The latter two devices are held on the end of the rover's robotic arm; the laser is mounted on its mast.

The investigation will give a good idea of the atoms present in the Matijevic rock and its likely mineralogical composition - although the Curiosity science team fully expects to "discover" another ubiquitous lump of Martian basalt (a volcanic rock).

"It's a cool looking rock with almost pure pyramidal geometry," said Prof John Grotzinger, the mission's lead scientist. Such a shape was not uncommon, he explained, and probably reflected wind erosion processes.

"Our general consensus view is that these are pieces of impact ejecta from an impact somewhere else, maybe outside of Gale Crater, that throws a rock on to the plains, and it just goes on to sit here for a long period of time. It weathers more slowly than the stuff that's around it. So, that means it's probably a harder rock."

The point of the upcoming exercise is to demonstrate the procedure for selecting targets of higher importance - rocks that in future could have significantly more scientific interest and which might require a sample to be drilled and delivered to two sophisticated analysis labs inside the rover's body.

In a briefing with journalists on Wednesday, the US space agency (Nasa) also released pictures taken by the rover of the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos passing in front of the sun.

These transits are relatively rare - twice per Martian year, which is once every Earth year - but are of great interest to scientists trying to understand the internal make-up of the Red Planet.

"[The moons] have tidal forces that they exert on Mars; they change Mars' shape ever so slightly," explained Curiosity researcher Mark Lemmon from Texas A&M University, College Station.

"That in turn changes the moons' orbits - Phobos is slowing down, Deimos is speeding up (like our Moon is). This is something that is happening very slowly over time.

"And with the transits, we can measure their orbits very precisely and figure out how fast they're doing this. The reason that's interesting is because it constrains Mars' interior structure. We can't go inside Mars but we can use these transits to tell how much Mars deforms when the moons go by."

Curiosity has now spent 43 sols (Martian days) on the planet. Much of that time has been spent commissioning the rover's systems and instruments.

The vehicle was sent to Mars to try to understand whether past environments at its landing location in Gale Crater could ever have supported microbial life.

That question will more properly be addressed when it gets to the base of the big mountain (Mount Sharp) that dominates the centre of the 150km-wide equatorial depression.

Sediments at the lower reaches of the peak appear from satellite pictures to have been laid down in the presence of abundant water.

Curiosity will establish whether that is so, but it is unlikely to begin this particular investigation for many months.

The mountain target lies several km to the south-west of its current location, and the desire to see the interesting rocks at Glenelg is actually taking the vehicle in the opposite direction to Mount Sharp.

The science team is in no hurry, however. Curiosity is equipped with a nuclear battery and has ample power to complete its prime two-year mission. Further funding from Nasa could yet see this project drive and drive deep into the decade.

SALUD - Una Emprendedora contra las orejas de Soplillo - ESPAÑA

Francisca Gamero estaba obsesionada con las orejas de su hija pequeña, que se empeñaban en doblarse y despegarse cuando se quedaba dormida. Empezó poniéndole esparadrapos para mantenerlas en su sitio, pero aquella idea peregrina fue tomando forma poco a poco hasta convertirse en un producto del que han vendido ya más de 60.000 unidades en las farmacias de toda España.
"Un día fue con mi hija al pediatra y cuando vi que se me había olvidado quitarle los esparadrapos pensé 'tierra, trágame'", relata Francisco desde Don Benito (Badajoz). Sin embargo, la especialista le aseguró que era una buena idea, que no dejara de hacerlo. "Yo había probado algunos otros productos, algunas pinzas que vendían en la farmacia, pero era todo muy aparatoso y poco efectivo".

Así que ni corta ni perezosa se lanzó a buscar una alternativa al esparadrapo casero. Gamero había mamado la iniciativa empresarial en casa, desde sus abuelos, y además de colaborar en la empresa agrícola familiar ya tenía otros antecedentes como emprendedora. "Había creado un pequeño supermercado y una empresa de distribución textil", relata, desmontando la imagen de ama de casa en paro que algunos medios han dado de ella. "Pero no me satisfacía lo que hacía".

La obsesión por las orejas de su hija ("que había nacido con ellas perfectas y se le empezaron a doblar al dormir") y la vena empresarial se unieron en este caso para dar lugar a Disras, una empresa que fabrica Otostick, pequeñas prótesis de silicona para corregir la oreja, y que da trabajo a nueve personas en la localidad de Don Benito.

Gamero empezó a desarrollar un prototipo alternativo al parche casero de esparadrapo con la Universidad de Extremadura. "Los primeros moldes de plata nos los hacía un joyero", recuerda ahora sorprendida con todo lo logrado en este tiempo ("la idea surgió en 2007, pero no empezamos a comercializar Otostick hasta finales de 2010").

Otostick es una pequeña prótesis transparente y adhesiva ("parece una lentilla") capaz de mantener la oreja en su posición correcta, manteniéndola pegada a la cabeza gracias a su forma eergonómica. Está fabricada a base de materiales hipoalergénicos y fue posible gracias a la colaboración de la Universidad de Alicante. Como explica su creadora, está indicada para niños a partir de tres años aunque también lo pueden emplear los adultos que no estén del todo satisfechos con sus pabellones auditivos.

"Llegar hasta aquí ha sido muy complicado", reconoce; "tuvimos que crear todo desde cero". Crear el producto, la fábrica, entrar en el mercado farmacéutico, obtener los permisos de la Agencia Española del Medicamento para ser considerados un producto sanitario... y comenzar a vender sus adhesivos para las orejas de soplillo en las farmacias sin invertir un solo euro en publicidad. "Ha sido todo gracias al boca a boca, y al impulso después de aparecer en un par de reportajes de televisión".

Todo este esfuerzo ha sido reconocido con el Premio de Excelencia a la Innovación para Mujeres Rurales, con el primer premio Proyecto Neex (nueva empresa extremeña) y, más recientemente, como finalista de los premios Emprendedor XXI de La Caixa y Enisa con otras 41 empresas (cuya final se celebrará en octubre). La propia Junta de Extremadura es socio minoritario de la compañía a través de la empresa pública Extremadura Avante SL.

Pero Innovaciones Disras, la empresa creada por Gamero con las iniciales de sus hijas (Diana y Raquel), no quiere dejar de crecer. El siguiente paso de esta mujer emprendedora es la creación de un producto para las orejas de bebés a partir del primer mes de vida apoyado por un proyecto CDTI (por ahora sólo se recomienda a partir de los tres años al tratarse de piezas pequeñas que pueden ser ingeridas). Además, "estamos realizando un trabajo de campo para poder cuantificar el porcentaje de éxito".

Siguen innovando

"Es importante seguir bien las instrucciones de uso y tener en cuenta que tiene un pequeño periodo de adaptación", explica Gamero, que también aclara que Otostick no es una varita mágica, ni es eficaz en todas las orejas. "El porcentaje de éxito depende de la edad del usuario y de la morfología de cada individuo", advierte. "Yo siempre les digo a los padres que esto es un tratamiento, y que hay que tener paciencia y constancia". De hecho, en algunos 'soplillos' muy pronunciados la única solución para una corrección definitiva es la cirugía (denominada otoplastia); aunque como aclara Gamero, estas 'pegatinas' pueden ser útiles para retrasar la intervención hasta una edad recomendada por los médicos.

Auque existen distintos tipos de técnicas quirúrgicas, en la mayoría de los casos se realiza una incisión en la parte posterior de la oreja para remodelar y 'plegar' el cartílago para reducir la profundidad de la concha de la oreja. Generalmente no se realiza antes de los siete u ocho años, hasta lo cual el niño puede sufrir importantes traumas por las burlas de otros escolares. La intervención se realiza en una hora aproximadamente con anestesia local, pero puede provocar molestias y complicaciones posteriores.

Otostick puede llegar a durar una semana sin despegarse y el resultado estético es inmediato. Como explica su creadora, en el caso de los niños pequeños, al colocar la oreja en posición correcta mientras el cartílago se va endureciendo a medida que los pequeños crecen, la corrección del pabellón auditivo puede ser permanente (aunque los resultados no empiecen a apreciarse antes de los seis meses). Además, impide que los pequeños adquieran orejas de soplillo por una mala posición al dormir
